Description

Presentation Skills Day for Research Students & Early Career Researchers
Dr Adair Richards

Who is it for? Research Students and Early Career Researchers

What will it cover? Worried about presenting at conferences, nervous about forthcoming seminars or just want to improve your presentation skills for many different reasons? Don't miss this opportunity to spend a whole day learning practical advice, getting the best tips, and also some practice, in honing your presentation skills and confidence when speaking aloud.

This experiential course is designed to help you plan, prepare and deliver effective academic presentations. It will cover the essential areas of presentations such as how to set objectives, analyse your audience, structure a coherent talk and design useful visual aids. It will also provide you with some tips for overcoming nerves, handling a Q&A and maintaining your audience’s engagement.

By the end of the day you will:-

- Know how to analyse your audience and prepare properly
- Have practised techniques to improve your vocal delivery and body language
- Know how to deliver a structured presentation with appropriate discourse markers
- Know how to create effective visual aids
- Be better equipped to deliver a memorable, engaging and persuasive presentation that does more than merely inform

You do not need to bring a pre-prepared presentation but there will be opportunities to give and receive feedback on your presentation style.

Adair is a master at PGR training and his interesting and practical workshops offer thought provoking ideas and practical application in combination.

This workshop is open to any student currently registered on a research degree programme or early career researcher at the University of Northampton. Further information is available from Simone Apel (simone.apel@northampton.ac.uk; 01604 893418).
